Palo Alto Security Hardening
PAN-OS security hardening aligned with Palo Alto best practices and CIS Benchmarks: admin access, SSL/TLS, SNMP, management plane restrictions, and security profile defaults.
What is it?
Palo Alto security hardening goes beyond just locking down the management plane — it includes configuring zone protection profiles (defend against flood attacks and port scans), ensuring security profiles (Threat Prevention, Antivirus, URL Filtering) are applied to all security rules, and following Palo Alto's Security Best Practices framework. The management plane should be accessible only from a dedicated out-of-band network. All admin access should use MFA (multi-factor authentication) via RADIUS/LDAP with Duo or similar. PAN-OS has strong built-in security features, but they must be explicitly enabled.
When to use
- ·Before any production deployment — hardening is mandatory, not optional
- ·After a Palo Alto Best Practice Assessment (BPA) — the tool identifies hardening gaps
- ·For PCI-DSS compliance — requirement 2 mandates no vendor default settings
- ·After purchasing a new unit — default admin/admin credentials must be changed immediately
When NOT to use
- ·Lab environments where strict timeouts and lockouts slow testing — use a separate lab profile
How it compares
Prerequisites
- →Admin access to the firewall before changing passwords or management ACLs
- →Management IP subnet known before restricting permitted-ip — wrong IPs cause lockout
- →An NTP server configured (for accurate lockout timing and log timestamps)
- →SSL certificate generated or uploaded for HTTPS management access before disabling HTTP
