The network OS where the BGP issue is occurring (e.g. Cisco IOS-XE, IOS XR, NX-OS, Juniper JunOS, Arista EOS)

Session type: eBGP / iBGP / iBGP with route-reflector / confederation / multihop eBGP

Output of show ip bgp summary or equivalent. Include show bgp neighbors <ip> for more detail.

Describe what is wrong — FSM state, missing routes, wrong next-hop, path selection issue, etc.

Any additional context: topology details, recent changes, relevant policies

Tips for better results

  • ·Include 'show ip bgp neighbors <ip>' output — it shows FSM state, capabilities negotiated, and error notifications
  • ·For missing routes: run 'show ip bgp <prefix>' to see if route exists but is not best (missing '>' marker)
  • ·For NX-OS: replace 'show ip bgp' with 'show bgp ipv4 unicast'; BGP processes are VRF-aware
  • ·For IOS XR: BGP config requires explicit address-family activation per neighbor
  • ·Include any route-maps or prefix-lists applied to the neighbor — policy is the #1 cause of missing routes in Established sessions

## Your Diagnostic Task

### 1. FSM State Analysis
Identify the BGP FSM state and what it means:
- **Idle**: BGP not attempting to connect. Check: neighbor shutdown configured? Outbound policy rejecting all? TCP refused?
- **Connect**: TCP SYN sent, waiting for SYN-ACK. Check: route to peer? ACL blocking TCP 179? Firewall issue?
- **Active**: TCP connection failed, retrying. Check: peer IP correct? Update-source correct (loopback for iBGP)? TTL for eBGP multihop?
- **OpenSent**: TCP established, OPEN sent, waiting for peer OPEN. Check: AS number mismatch? BGP identifier conflict?
- **OpenConfirm**: Both OPENs exchanged, waiting for KEEPALIVE. Check: hold-time? Capability mismatch (4-byte ASN, add-path)?
- **Established**: Session up. If routes missing, proceed to path selection and policy analysis.

### 2. Platform-Specific Diagnostic Commands for [Vendor / OS]
- **Cisco IOS/IOS-XE**: show ip bgp neighbors <ip>, show ip bgp <prefix>, debug ip bgp <ip> events, debug ip bgp <ip> updates
- **Cisco IOS XR**: show bgp neighbors <ip>, show bgp <prefix>, show bgp policy route-policy <name>
- **Cisco NX-OS**: show bgp neighbors <ip>, show bgp ipv4 unicast <prefix>, show bgp ipv4 unicast policy statistics neighbor <ip>
- **Juniper JunOS**: show bgp neighbor <ip>, show route receive-protocol bgp <ip>, show route advertising-protocol bgp <ip>
- **Arista EOS**: show bgp neighbors <ip>, show bgp <prefix>, show bgp neighbors <ip> received-routes

### 3. BGP Path Selection Diagnostic Tree
If session is Established but routes are missing or wrong path selected, walk through the decision algorithm:
1. **Weight** (Cisco-only, local): higher preferred
2. **Local-Preference**: higher preferred (default 100); check inbound route-map
3. **Locally originated**: network/redistribute/aggregate wins over learned
4. **AS-PATH length**: shorter wins; check as-path prepend in route-map
5. **Origin**: IGP (i) > EGP (e) > Incomplete (?)
6. **MED**: lower wins; only compared between same-AS routes (unless bgp always-compare-med)
7. **eBGP over iBGP**: external routes preferred
8. **IGP metric to NEXT_HOP**: lower wins — check next-hop reachability
9. **Oldest eBGP path** (stability tiebreaker)
10. **Router ID**: lower wins

### 4. Route Reflector and Confederation Issues
- **Cluster ID loop**: route has CLUSTER_LIST containing this RR cluster-id → dropped. Fix: ensure unique cluster-IDs per RR cluster.
- **ORIGINATOR_ID loop**: route originated by this router → correctly dropped by RR.
- **RR not reflecting**: check client vs non-client peering; iBGP full-mesh still required between non-clients.
- **Confederation**: verify confederation peers list is correct; AS_PATH shows confederation AS in parentheses.

### 5. NEXT_HOP Unreachable (iBGP)
eBGP-learned routes have NEXT_HOP set to the external peer IP. iBGP speakers need IGP reachability to that next-hop.
- Fix 1: next-hop-self on the iBGP session at the eBGP-facing router
- Fix 2: Redistribute the peering subnet into IGP
- Fix 3 (IOS XR BGP-free core): next-hop-unchanged with labeled unicast

### 6. Route Policy and Filtering Issues
- Inbound filter dropping routes: compare show ip bgp neighbors <ip> received-routes vs show ip bgp neighbors <ip> routes
- Outbound filter: check show ip bgp neighbors <ip> advertised-routes
- Route dampening: show ip bgp dampened-paths — routes suppressed after flapping
- Apply soft reset to re-evaluate policy: clear ip bgp <ip> soft

### 7. Root Cause and Fix
Based on the output and symptoms, state:
- Most likely root cause with confidence level
- Exact configuration fix using [Vendor / OS] CLI syntax
- Verification command to confirm fix worked
- Related issues to check while in this area

### 8. Platform Gotchas for [Vendor / OS]
List 2-3 platform-specific BGP behaviors, known issues, or common mistakes relevant to this scenario.
